The Descent from Adam

497 NAMED · 12 BOOKS · WORLD ENGLISH BIBLE

Every parent, spouse and child below is anchored to the verse that establishes it. Where scripture names no parent, the record says so rather than inventing a bridge.

Not joined to the tree

87 of the 497 records cannot be reached from Adam by any parent the text supplies. That is not an omission — it is what those verses say. Genesis 36:40-43 lists eleven chiefs of Edom by family, place and name, with no “sons of” and no “bore” anywhere in the passage; several of the kings of Edom reign “in his place” after the last one dies, with no father named; 1 Chronicles 3:21 gives four men in a series of headings and a parent to none of them. Drawing an edge in any of those places would mean supplying a word the text withholds, so the names are kept and the gap is left standing.

  • Elimelechjudahno parent named — with Naomino parent named

A man of Bethlehem Judah who went to live in Moab. No parents are named for him, so none are recorded.

    Ruth 1:2Ruth 1:3

“The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there.” Ruth 1:2

“Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons.” Ruth 1:3

    • Mahlonjudah — with Ruthno parent named

      Died in Moab, childless.

      Ruth 1:2Ruth 1:4Ruth 1:5

“The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there.” Ruth 1:2

“They took for themselves wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there about ten years.” Ruth 1:4

“Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.” Ruth 1:5

    • Chilionjudah — with Orpahno parent named

      Died in Moab, childless.

      Ruth 1:2Ruth 1:4Ruth 1:5

“They took for themselves wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there about ten years.” Ruth 1:4

“Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.” Ruth 1:5

  • Talmaidavidicno parent named

King of Geshur, named as Maacah's father. Nothing further of his descent is given.

    1 Chronicles 3:2

“the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;” 1 Chronicles 3:2

    • Maacahdavidic — with David

Daughter of Talmai king of Geshur.

      1 Chronicles 3:2

“the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;” 1 Chronicles 3:2

  • Ammieldavidicno parent named

Named as Bathshua's father in the genealogy. 2 Samuel 11:3 names Bathsheba's father as Eliam; the two are not merged here.

    1 Chronicles 3:5

“and these were born to him in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon, four, by Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel;” 1 Chronicles 3:5

    • Bathshua (Bathsheba)davidic — with David and Uriahno parent named

Named Bathshua daughter of Ammiel in the genealogy (1 Chronicles 3:5) and Bathsheba daughter of Eliam in 2 Samuel 11:3. Both renderings are recorded; whether the two fathers are one man is not something this record settles.

      1 Chronicles 3:52 Samuel 11:32 Samuel 12:24

“and these were born to him in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon, four, by Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel;” 1 Chronicles 3:5

“David sent and inquired after the woman. One said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, Uriah the Hittite’s wife?”” 2 Samuel 11:3

“David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him;” 2 Samuel 12:24

  • Shuajudahno parent named

A Canaanite of Adullam. Genesis 38:2 names him solely as the father of the woman Judah married, and does not name her — so his daughter, Judah's wife and the mother of Er, Onan and Shelah, has no record here. The gap is hers, not his.

    Genesis 38:2

“There, Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite man named Shua. He took her, and went in to her.” Genesis 38:2

  • Rephaiahdavidicno parent named

1 Chronicles 3:21 names him in a series of parallel headings — the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shecaniah — following the sons of Hananiah. The verse states no father for him. Reading the series as a vertical descent requires emending the sons of to his son, so this dataset leaves the gap the grammar leaves. His sons are referred to and never named, so no record hangs beneath him.

    1 Chronicles 3:21

“The sons of Hananiah: Pelatiah and Jeshaiah; the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shecaniah.” 1 Chronicles 3:21

  • Arnandavidicno parent named

  • Obadiahdavidicno parent named

  • Shecaniahdavidicno parent named

1 Chronicles 3:21 names him in a series of parallel headings — the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shecaniah — following the sons of Hananiah. The verse states no father for him. Reading the series as a vertical descent requires emending the sons of to his son, so this dataset leaves the gap the grammar leaves. 1 Chronicles 3:22 then names Shemaiah as his son, and the list turns vertical again from there.

    1 Chronicles 3:21

“The sons of Hananiah: Pelatiah and Jeshaiah; the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shecaniah.” 1 Chronicles 3:21

    • Shemaiahdavidic

1 Chronicles 3:22 names him the son of Shecaniah, in the singular, where 3:21 gave only parallel headings. The vertical structure resumes here because the text resumes it.

      1 Chronicles 3:22

“The son of Shecaniah: Shemaiah. The sons of Shemaiah: Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat, six.” 1 Chronicles 3:22

      • Hattushdavidic

1 Chronicles 3:22 lists five sons of Shemaiah and then counts six. The names are transcribed as given and the count is left as given; correcting either would be emendation.

        1 Chronicles 3:22

“The son of Shecaniah: Shemaiah. The sons of Shemaiah: Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat, six.” 1 Chronicles 3:22

  • Seirhoriteno parent named

Seir the Horite, whose sons are the inhabitants of the land. The text gives him no father, and does not descend him from Esau — Esau settled in his hill country. This branch is Horite, not Edomite by descent.

    Genesis 36:20Genesis 36:21

“These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,” Genesis 36:20

Genesis 36:20 lists him among the sons of Seir, and 36:24 among the children of Zibeon. Both statements are transcribed; the parent edge follows 36:24, which is the narrower claim, and 36:20 is cited beside it.
